Accessibility Statement
Last updated: October 18, 2026
1. Our Commitment to Accessibility
At MathMate, we believe that high-quality mathematics resources should be accessible to all educators and students.
We are committed to improving the accessibility and usability of MathMate and are working toward alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA.
MathMate has not yet undergone an independent accessibility audit, and we do not currently claim full conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We recognize that accessibility is an ongoing process and are committed to identifying barriers, improving our tools, and responding to feedback from educators.
2. Current Accessibility Features
MathMate includes features designed to support a range of accessibility needs.
Display and Navigation
- Pages support browser zoom and adapt to different screen sizes, including desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
- Main tool cards can be accessed using keyboard navigation, with visible focus indicators.
- Pages use headings, language identification, and labeled form fields to support navigation and assistive technologies.
Mathematical Content
- Mathematical notation is displayed using KaTeX, which provides MathML representations intended to support compatible screen readers.
- Instructional materials can be printed or saved as PDFs, allowing educators to enlarge, adapt, or distribute resources as needed.
- Teacher answer keys can be included or excluded before printing.
Early Numeracy Resources
- Full-screen question slides support keyboard navigation.
- Arrow keys move between slides, the A key shows or hides answers, and Escape closes the viewer.
- Question slides include brief text descriptions intended to support screen-reader access.
- Early Numeracy activities can be facilitated by teachers using verbal descriptions and guided instruction.
Language Options
- MathMate provides a language-selection feature to support educators using available interface languages.
We use automated accessibility-checking tools on selected public pages to help identify potential issues. Automated testing alone does not establish full accessibility or conformance.
3. Known Accessibility Limitations
We recognize that some aspects of MathMate require additional accessibility improvements.
Mathematical Diagrams and Visuals
Some generated diagrams, models, and illustrations do not yet include complete text descriptions. As a result, certain visual materials may not be fully accessible to individuals relying exclusively on screen readers.
AI-Generated Instructional Materials
MathMate generates instructional resources based on educator selections and requests. Although many materials use standard document structures, not all generated content has been individually evaluated for accessibility.
Keyboard and Screen-Reader Compatibility
Keyboard navigation has been evaluated for selected features, including main tool cards and Early Numeracy slides. Additional testing is needed for certain menus, interactive activities, and pop-up components.
Page Navigation
Some pages do not yet include complete landmark identification or skip-navigation links.
Color Contrast
Certain text and link colors may not consistently meet recommended contrast ratios. Improvements are being evaluated.
Interactive Activities
Some drag-and-drop, timed, or visually interactive activities may present barriers for users who rely on keyboards or assistive technologies. Printable alternatives may be available for certain activities.
Voice Input
Voice-input functionality depends on browser capabilities and may not be supported consistently across devices or assistive technologies.
4. Recommendations for Educators
Educators can help improve access to MathMate materials by:
- Using browser zoom or enlarged print settings when students need larger text.
- Reading mathematical prompts aloud and describing visual representations when appropriate.
- Providing printed or adapted versions of activities when interactive formats are not accessible.
- Using teacher-guided instruction to support students who need additional assistance with visual or interactive content.
- Contacting MathMate when a resource presents an accessibility barrier.
5. Ongoing Improvements
MathMate is continuing to evaluate and improve accessibility across its website and instructional tools.
Our priorities include improving keyboard navigation, screen-reader compatibility, color contrast, descriptive text for mathematical visuals, and accessibility of generated instructional materials.
As improvements are implemented and evaluated, this statement will be updated to reflect the current accessibility status of the platform.
6. Accessibility Feedback and Assistance
We welcome feedback from educators and other users regarding accessibility barriers.
If you experience difficulty accessing any part of MathMate, please contact:
Email: admin@mathmate.org
When possible, include the page or tool involved, a description of the difficulty, and the browser or assistive technology being used.
We will review accessibility concerns and work to identify reasonable improvements or alternative ways to access the requested instructional content when feasible.
MathMate is committed to making mathematics resources increasingly accessible, practical, and supportive for the educators and students who rely on them.
